From Our March Cache Anglers Meeting....
Where in the Logan River system is the highest density of trout? Phaedra Budy showed us that elevation makes a difference with specific species:
Brown Trout have their highest densities in Right Hand Fork:
And Cutthroat densities were highest in Franklin Basin:
Where are the largest trout found? Phaedra's research suprised most of us:
Our thanks to Dr. Phaedra Budy of USU for her presentation at our March Cache Anglers meeting! Phaedra also presented a plan for Bonneville cutthroat trout enhancement. This plan involves reducing numbers of brown trout in the Right Hand Fork of the Logan River in the long term, and between second and third dams in the short term. Potentially controversial, the nearly 30 Cache Anglers at the meeting voted unanimously to support the enhancement program, and to lend our help where needed. We will likely be involved down the road on the Right Hand Fork in particular.
During the meeting we also discussed the "victory" over House Bill 187 being defeated. We will want to watch next year's legislative effort carefully and participate in any work during the next 9 months to shape a bill that balances the rights of landowners and the rights of water recreational users.
We have two busy months coming up and need your help and involvement with a number of projects and activities.
April 8: Sara Seidel will be defending her master's thesis: "Evaluating the spawning ecology and early life history of Bonneville cutthroat trout in the Logan River, Utah." Her defense will begin at 1:30 in room 307 of the Eccles Conference Center at USU. You may recall that Sara presented some of this information at our Cache Anglers meeting in January. She has invited members of the Cache Anglers to attend.
April 15 Cache Anglers Meeting: Warren Colyer, a TU biologist working in this area, will discuss the Cub River in northern Cache Valley. Warren has been instrumental in developing a major fish ladder and fish screen on the Cub River to allow large Bonneville cutthroat to access the stream for spawning, and to keep young fish from ending up in an irrigation canal.
April 25: Salmon Fly Transplant Project on the Blacksmith Fork River. Cache Anglers will partner with the Bug Lab and UDWR to organize another fascinating day of kicking rocks and gathering bugs. More details will emerge at our April Cache Anglers meeting.
May 9: Left Hand Fork restoration project. Paul Chase will have more details for us at our April Cache Anglers meeting.
May 16: Spawn Creek Fencing repair. Paul Chase is coordinating this project. Work would include hiking, packing materials, hammering, and standing fence (5-6 hours). Volunteers would need to wear boots, long sleeve shirts and pants, bring gloves, water, and a lunch. They could also bring a hammer and fencing pliers (we will provide fencing equipment for those that don't bring their own). We will meet at the Temple Fork turn-off in Logan Canyon (probably at 9 am). Paul will be the FS contact and can be reached at either the will also have details on this project at our April Cache Anglers meeting.
Join us at our new location, the Bullen Center at 43 S. Main in Logan on April 15 at 7 PM (enter in the back and take the elevator to the 2nd floor) for another interesting meeting.
