February Meeting
Written by BrianO
Thursday, 04 February 2010 13:55

Dear Cache Anglers,

Thanks for coming out and participating in our first 2010 meeting in January.  We primarily discussed projects/issues for this year, including flows in the lower Logan River if the two canals combine, the Right Hand Fork Project, the Oneida Narrows project, the WASATCH FLY TYING EXPO, and some field trip opportunities.

Our February meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 10, starting at 7 PM in the Multipurpose room at the Cache County Building, 179 N. Main, Logan.  We will briefly discuss the Wasatch Expo planning and look for volunteers to help out, as well as other 2010 projects.

The main item for the February meeting is a presentation by Smithfield resident Nick Douglass on fly fishing in Alaska!!  Nick has been a guide in Alaska for 20 years, and has lots of tales and fish stories to tell.  He has guided float trips, camping trips, and now is a guide at a high dollar, fancy, fly out lodge.  During the winter Nick works on the Dream Lift at Beaver Mountain.  Come join us for a fun evening of Alaska fishing.  You'll see a few more pictures like the one below!!!!!

September Meeting

I hope everyone's summer provided you the rest and energy you need to tackle a busy fall schedule. I'll go slow for those of you who are still shifting gears:

FIRST: Here's a brief synopsis of our July Cache Anglers meeting:
Along with the grilled chicken, pasta salad, and brownies, the video of glaciers, humpback whales, 31 inch rainbow trout, and 25 lb king salmon, the Cache Anglers' July 22 meeting was an historic event.  We met with the LGU Pilots Association in a first ever meeting of the two groups to hear and see about flying to Alaska in a single engine plane to fish in the bush for rainbows, grayling, and king salmon, with side trips for halibut.  Alaska is a dream trip in either a small plane, or as a fly fisherman, especially to the remote parts of Bristol Bay.  About 35 pilots and fisherpersons were entertained at the Leading Edge Aviation hanger at the Cache airport. We hope to do more of these kinds of meetings with other groups with interests similar to anglers.

SECOND:  Our upcoming SEPTEMBER 15 MEETING (Yes, it is a TUESDAY) will be held back at our favorite meeting room, the CACHE COUNTY MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM at 179 N. Main. Park in the parking lot on the WEST side of the building and use the WEST door to enter.
  • We have a special fly tying presentation that deviates from the typical fly tying program. We bow to Bob Trowbridge and Tim King: they are the gods of fly tying in Cache Valley. However, we're not sure they can actually CATCH fish with their flies. So we've invited three "amateur" fly tyers to demonstrate their favorite fall flies. Their flies don't look so great sometimes, but these guys CATCH FISH! You'll not only get to see HOW they tie their amateur flies, but you'll also learn how to fish these patterns. They may even have some pictures of fish they have caught....
  • We hope to have an update from Phaedra on the Right Hand Fork project with some ideas of how Cache Anglers can help this fall and next spring.
  • We will all hear how the Fencing Project on Spawn Creek has worked (and, in some cases, NOT worked) and what Cache Anglers may do to ensure continued success with this project

THIRD:  Here is more info about a number of things: YES, there are some BIG Browns in the Logan River. Come to our next meeting to find out WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

We will also be discussing our ongoing projects, upcoming projects, and plans for the winter.  The Cache Anglers will join with TU throughout Utah on Saturday, September 26, to clean up local streams.  We will likely work on the Logan River, but please set aside part of that Saturday to help out.

Was that slow enough for you?

Paul, Clarence, and I hope to see you on Tuesday, September 15, for our next meeting.

Hey, Everyone!
Three quick items for your attention:
FIRST, don't forget the Spawn Creek fencing project on Saturday, May 16. Work would include hiking, packing materials, hammering, and standing fence (5-6 hours). Volunteers would need to wear boots, long sleeve shirts and pants, bring gloves, water, and a lunch. They could also bring a hammer and fencing pliers (we will provide fencing equipment for those that don't bring their own). We will meet at the Temple Fork turn-off in Logan Canyon (probably at 9 am). I'll be the FS contact and can be reached at either the Ogden Ranger District (801-625-5114) or the Logan Ranger District (435-755-3629) if people have questions. Also, if people are looking for Dedicated Hunter hours, this project can be used.

SECOND, our next Cache Anglers meeting is coming up on Wednesday, May 20. Zack Dalton, a representative from Rio Fly Line Company will discuss the latest technologies in fly lines, leaders, tippets, etc. Come and enjoy a fun time and bring your questions, such as "What weight line should I put on my 8 wt? What's the best dry fly line? How often do I need to replace my line?" We'll meet at the Bullen Center at 43 S. Main in Logan at 7 PM
THIRD, we still do not have the new date for the Salmon Fly Transplant project. We hope to have details ready by the time we have our next Cache Anglers meeting.
Even though waters are rising, there's been some great fishing around the valley. Get out there and enjoy the spring fishing and be ready to brag at our next meeting.
